OUTREACH 2018: Future International Research Cooperation in the Arctic Ocean

With rector Anne Husebekk at the helm, an expert team from UiT The Arctic University of Norway, and The University Center in Svalbard, Arctic SIZE scientist Paul Wassmann acted as the chief scientist at this year’s Outreach Cruise.  Invited participants included high-ranking marine research organization experts from the USA, Canada, Germany, Denmark/Greenland, the EU, and Norway that came togehter to discuss how international research could be organized proceeding the Arctic Council’s Agreement on Enhancing International Arctic Scientific Cooperation.  The expert team visited Longyearbyen, Barentsburg, Pyramiden, Ny Ålsesund and Smeerenburg and also made an excursion to the ice edge and associated marginal ice zone.  All visits included guiding on local history and science by the leader team.  New projects were considered and discussions were organized regarding the second Arctic Ministerial that will take place in late October in Berlin.  And, last but not least, the role of UiT The Arctic University of Norway in accelerating marine research in the Arctic Ocean by inviting international experts and participating in international research projects was discussed and developed.
