Last week Arctic SIZE PhD students Ulrike Dietrich and Tobias Vonnahme hosted a session about bridging disciplines in the seasonal ice zone during the 9th YOUMARES Conference in Oldenburg, Germany. The session aimed to bring young scientists from different disciplines and geographical areas in the seasonal ice zone together for future collaborations.
During the session we heard about microbial ecology in the Polar night from Marti Amargant-Arumi who recently finished his Master thesis in Association With Arctic SIZE. We heard about the effects of Krill and salps on the carbon export in Antarctica and we heard about the potential for mixotrophy and nitrification in the Polar night from Rose M Bank, who recently started her Master thesis within Arctic SIZE. The Arctic University in Tromsø was further represented by Zoe Walker, who presented her work on vertical carbon fluxes in Kaldfjord near Tromsø, and Kristine Cerbule, presenting her work on salmon lice.
Besides we learned a lot about other marine areas with a focus on microbial ecology and biogeochemistry, which appeared to be a strength of the hosting institutions. During different workshops we discussed the importance of Public outreach and open Access publications.
