Last week, Emma Persson started her master’s thesis research by conducting her first sea ice sampling in Ramfjorden.
Together with Tobias, Ulrike, and Rolf, Emma will investigate what happens when sea ice forms. She will specifically look into the incorporation of sea ice algae and their growth. The key question is what makes sea ice algae successful in their extreme habitat. Emma will combine lab experiments with artificial sea ice production with field work on Ramfjorden, where she investigates algal communities in sea ice during formation. The study was recently supported by a grant in-aid of research from the Phycological Society of America.
