On-Chip Sensing wins Tycho Jæger’s Prize in Electro-Optics 2024

Tycho Jæger’s Prize in Electro-Optics is awarded by Irma Salo Jæger og Tycho Jægers stiftelse, a charitable foundation, and the Physical Society of Norway (Norsk fysisk selskap, NFS). It is awarded every second year an it is announced during the Norwegian Electro-Optics meeting. The prize consists of a monetary part, 200 000 NOK and a diploma. The prize focuses on young scientists doing research in Norway. The selection committee this year were Torbjørn Skauli, Johanne Heitmann Solheim and Jon Kristian Hagene.

The Norwegian Electro-Optics Meeting 2024 was held in Oscarsborg and brought together researchers and representatives of companies working in Electro-Optics in Norway. The presentations included invited talks by leading international scientists, along with presentations from researchers, graduate students, and Norwegian companies. The meeting series was organized by the Optics Group of the Norwegian Physical Society. Oscarsborg was a fortress on an island in the Oslo fjord, which is now operated as a hotel and a museum.

This year, the winners of Tycho Jæger’s prize were Jana Jágerská,  Marek Vlk,  Anurup DattaSebastian Alberti and Jehona Salaj.

The prize was awarded for:

The development of a spectroscopic gas-sensor in form of a micro-optical chip with a new waveguide structure suspended in air which gives a very high sensitivity.

The work has shown that this enables measurement of very low gas concentrations with good selectivity by use of a miniaturised sensor head.
