Welcome to ArcticDoc, the dedicated interest organization for PhD candidates and postdocs at UiT – The Arctic University of Norway. Founded on March 2nd, 2011 as TODOS, but rebranded on December 5th, 2025, ArcticDoc is a neutral entity committed to enhancing the overall welfare of its members. We are not a union, nor are we affiliated with any political, religious, or union organization. Our mission is clear: to support, assist, guide, and help you throughout your academic journey at UiT.
At ArcticDoc, we understand that the journey of a PhD candidate or postdoc involves more than just academic pursuits. Therefore, our approach is twofold: fostering a positive academic work environment and ensuring a vibrant social life. We believe that a supportive academic atmosphere and an active social community are key to a fulfilling experience at UiT.
ArcticDoc is your go-to source for a variety of tailored activities and resources:
- Educational and Professional Development: We organize seminars, workshops, and courses specifically designed for the unique needs of PhDs and postdocs. These include professional development seminars, transferable skills courses, and our popular weekly “Shut Up and Work!” sessions.
- Advocacy and Support: We are here to protect your rights and offer support during challenging times. Whether it’s issues related to housing, voting rights, or other concerns, ArcticDoc lobbies on your behalf and connects you with the necessary resources and administration.
- Social and Networking Events: From monthly social gatherings to concerts and parties, we strive to create engaging and enjoyable events that allow you to relax, meet, and mingle with your peers.
- Information and Communication: Continual updates through all available media, including the PhD candidate information brochure and periodic surveys, ensure you stay informed and connected.
ArcticDoc collaborates closely with UiT administration, the scientific staff, and various entities within the university to ensure your voice is heard and your needs are met. As a member of SiN (Association of doctoral organizations in Norway) and Eurodoc (The European council of doctoral candidates and junior researchers), we leverage a broader network to enhance the doctoral experience.
All PhD candidates and postdocs at UiT are automatically members of ArcticDoc, ensuring inclusive representation. Those preferring not to be represented can opt-out by notifying the ArcticDoc Board.
We value transparency and continuity in our operations. Our General Meetings, held twice a year, are pivotal events where members can participate in the democratic process, with half of the board being elected at each meeting. This structure ensures fresh ideas and steady progress in meeting the needs of our community.
Whether you are seeking professional growth, academic support, or social interaction, ArcticDoc is here to ensure that your time at UiT is not only productive but also enjoyable. Get involved today to make the most of your PhD or postdoc experience. Together, let’s make your journey at UiT remarkable.
