Mid-conference excursion

This one-day excursion (Wednesday, June 4th) will expose participants to the spectacular north Norwegian fjord and alpine landscape.

The scientific focus will be on the Quaternary and glacial geology of the area, with particular emphasis on the Tromsø-Lyngen Event (a glacial readvance during the Younger Dryas), with prominent moraines and associated ice-marginal deposits observed in fjords and coastal valleys.

Some of the themes that will be discussed are the regional deglaciation pattern, relative sea-level changes, and associated landforms.

Practical information

This is a bus excursion without any long hikes. The driving time to the excursion area is ca. 1 hour and driving distances between localities are less than 30 min.

There are no facilities at any of the localities, but there is a bathroom onboard the chartered bus that will be with us all day. We will get a brown bag lunch at one of the localities.

Remember to bring a rain jacket, water bottle, and sun protection. Sturdy running shoes or light walking boots are sufficient. More information (including the excursion guide) will be distributed to those who selected the excursion at registration.
