New leadership at CAGE

Professor Karin Andreassen is the new director of Centre for Arctic Gas Hydrate, Environment and Climate.

Karin Andreassen is professor in marine geology and geophysics at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. Her main research interests is the Cenozoic development of the Barents Sea area, with focus on glacial geomorphology, sediments and processes, shallow gas and fluid flow. She holds a PhD degree in applied geophysics from UiT.

Professor Andreassen is succeeding professor Jürgen Mienert to the position, after serving five years as the assistant director of CAGE. 

Professor Andreassen has taught marine geology and geophysics at all levels, and supervised many master’s and PhD students. She has also been a visiting professor at the University of Cambridge, the University of Montpellier, and the University of Barcelona.

She is joined in by two co-directors: researchers Monica Winsborrow (CAGE) and Jochen Knies from CAGE’s partner Geological Survey of Norway ( NGU). Monica Winsborrow is also taking over professor Andreassen’s previous responsibilities as the team leader for the Subseabed research group.

In related news: Professor Mette Marianne Svenning is taking the reigns of Seabed group focusing on methane release, micro organisms and benthic fauna response. Professor Svenning is acclaimed biologist from UiT The Arctic University of Norway.
