Get to know Tromsø

Tromsø is located at 69° north with a population of approximately 80.000 people. Tromsø is well known for its northern lights – the aurora borealis – resulting in a large number of tourists and visitors from all over the world each year. Furthermore, Tromsø also has midnight sun between May and July, which can only be seen in places either north of the Arctic Circle, or south of the Antarctic Circle. If you’re lucky, you may be able to experience this phenomenon while attending CCGrid 2025!

When visiting Tromsø, you’ll have plenty of things to do. If you’re the outdoorsy kind, you may want to take a hike in our beautiful nature and many mountains around Tromsø, or maybe book a trip out on the sea for a whale safari? Our surrounding nature certainly has much to offer, but if you’d like to get familiar with the city, we have several museums, local shops, restaurants, and a rich cultural life!

17th of May: Norway’s Constitution Day

If you arrive in Tromsø before the conference starts, you’ll be able to experience Norway’s Constitution Day on the 17th of May! On this public holiday, the people of Tromsø gather in the city center for parades, food and drinks, in a more or less all-day celebration of the signing of the constitution in 1814. This holiday is especially important in Norway, and people in all cities and towns across the country celebrate it. So if you’re here on the 17th, we really recommend going out in the streets to join the celebration!


Restaurants and Cafés

Tromsø has a great number of restaurants, offering something for every taste. Whether you prefer meat, fish, vegetarian or vegan, Tromsø has something for you. There are also lots of cozy cafés and bars around town.
