Research professor in Arctic archaeology at the Ethnographic Collection, Modern Times and World Cultures, The National Museum of Denmark.
Assistant and associate professor at the Institute of Classic and Prehistoric Archaeology (1987–1995), University of Copenhagen. Director of the Historical-Archaeological Experimental Centre in Lejre (1995–1999). Head of SILA–The Greenland Research Centre at the National Museum of Denmark (1999–2008) and research professor at the same institution from 2009. Participated in and headed archaeological research projects in the Arctic, in particular Greenland, since 1977. Currently head of two interdisciplinary research projects (the Carpenter-Meldgaard Project and the NOW Project) with a starting point in studies of human societies, material culture, and resources in a long term perspective.
