You got a Ph.d. – now what?

Only 12% of the persons finishing a PhD degree in Norway find a job within Academia. What about the rest? What do they do? Where do they go? And how do they get there?

The speakers we have selected took different paths after they received their PhD. Come to listen to their stories, find out their motivations and learn from their experience!

Thematic University Business Forum – Driving Competitiveness, Employability and Prosperity

Cooperation between higher education and business is at the core of the modernization Agenda of Higher Education, and crucial to making higher education more responsive to the needs of society. Effective cooperation strengthens the exchange and sharing of knowledge between business and academia and stimulates innovation in both environments. This type of cooperation has resulted in a range of policies and activities designed to encourage higher education institutions to build stronger links with the business sector. Companies should be (more) involved in the design and delivery of curricula, at both undergraduate and graduate level. Higher education institutions and business partners should work together more closely to promote entrepreneurship, mobility (between business and academia) and Lifelong Learning.

This University-Business Forum, organised by the European Commission in partnership with the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) and the Confederation of German Employers’ Associations (BDA), provides a unique opportunity to present and discuss common issues, to share examples of good practice and to explore the advantages and the value of sustained cooperation. This is an ideal opportunity to learn from each other, to develop understanding and the capabilities for future cooperation.

SAKS – Rådslag om struktur i norsk forskning (Samarbeidskonferanse FFA – UHR)

Arbeidet med stortingsmelding om struktur i UH-sektoren er godt i gang. Kunnskapsdepartementet har utfordret UH-institusjonene bl.a. på hvordan de ser sin institusjon i relasjon til andre institusjoner, inklusive forskningsinstitutter. Forskningsrådet løfter fram struktur som utfordring i sin instituttstrategi. Regjeringens strategi for forsknings- og innovasjonssamarbeid med EU og Horisont 2020 peker på behov for økt samarbeid mellom sektorene. Samtidig skjer det allerede mye innen og på tvers av de to sektorene, f.eks. på Campus Ås mellom NMBU og primærnæringsinstituttene, NOVA og AFI er blitt en del av Høgskolen i Oslo og Akershus, flere regionale institutter og høgskoler er tett knyttet sammen. Blir det nye allianser og fusjoner i tiden fremover? Hvordan kan UH-institusjonene og institiuttene samhandle bedre for å styrke kvaliteten og samfunnsnytten av norsk forskning? Hvilke prosesser knyttet til samarbeids- og integrasjonsmodeller skjer i våre naboland og hva kan vi lære av disse?

MNT – Konferansen 2015

Kartlegginger som er gjort viser at økt fokus på pedagogisk utvikling er viktig for å redusere frafall og øke gjennomstrømming. Videre ser vi at overgangen mellom de ulike skolenivåene og overgangene mellom utdanningssektor og arbeidsliv er punkt som ofte oppleves som utfordrende. MNT-konferansens første dag vil derfor ha et pedagogisk utviklingsfokus, mens andre dag vil ta for seg samarbeid mellom høyere utdanning, videregående opplæring og arbeidsliv.

PhD – Course: Historical Representation in Games: Informal and formal learning about history through games

Given the massive commercial successes of the medium in recent years, digital historical games (i.e. games that utilize historical settings) have rapidly become one of the most widespread and successful forms of popular history. This, alongside their chosen historical content, makes them potentially highly influential histories that are generally experienced in informal settings. Similarly, the possibilities of a new form of history also raise interesting new questions for formal educational settings that must be answered. Despite, the widespread nature of games as cultural products, historical game studies (though benefitting from disciplinary diversity and featuring much good research) is still a somewhat scattered and incoherent field that can therefore be difficult for students to access. The Historical Representation in Games course pulls these strands together into a unified curriculum that provides a foundational basis for approaching historical games (both digital and non-digital) and exploring their possibilities and limitations as a form of history.

Kurs i universitetspedagogikk for stipendiater er et tilbud til deg som er ansatt som stipendiat ved UiT. Du må ha avtale om undervisningsoppgaver på instituttet nå i høstsemesteret. Fullført kurs gir deg 50 timer uttelling i arbeidsplikten.

 

Kurset gir deg i stand til å:

  • planlegge og gjennomføre undervisning
  • utvikle dine egne undervisningsferdigheter
  • utvikle og reflektere over egen undervisning med utgangspunkt i teori om undervisning og læring

 

Kurset tilbys av RESULT – Ressurssenter for undervisning, læring og teknologi.

OpenCon 2014

OpenCon 2014 is the student and early career researcher conference on Open Access, Open Education, and Open Data and will be held on November 15-17, 2014 in Washington, DC. It is organized by the Right to Research CoalitionSPARC (The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition), and an Organizing Committee of students and early career researchers from around the world.

Course: Agent based modeling and simulation

When: 20th – 30th of October, 2014

Where: Rostock, Germany

The course aims at introducing students to agent-based modeling and simulation and offers four important skills: simulation skills, an agent-based modeling language, software skills (NetLogo), as well as strategies for designing agent-based models and implementing simulation experiments. This course is jointly organized by the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, the Vienna Institute of Demography and the University of Southampton.

 

There is no tuition fee. However, students are expected to pay their own transportation and living costs. A limited number of scholarships are available on a competitive basis for outstanding candidates and for those applicants who might otherwise not be able to come.

Course: Companion Modeling: Principles and applications with a special focus on facilitation

When: 21st – 26th of September, 2014

Where: Wageningen, The Netherlands

 

Companion Modelling, or ComMod, is a participatory modelling approach that uses role-playing games and simulation models to tackle complex issues in the fields of renewable resources and environment management. ComMod promotes dialogue, shared learning and collective decision-making, strengthening the adaptive management capacity of communities facing wicked environmental problems. A ComMod approach is iterative and evolves with the participative process whereby stakeholders are involved in the definition and design of the questions, models, simulations and outputs. It involves constant back and forth steps between the model, the field and the negotiation table.

 

The course will focus on:

– Concepts e.g., wicked problems, socio-ecological systems, complex systems, participatory modelling, simulation strategies.

– Methods and related tools e.g.,: system representation, participatory mapping, model conceptualization, agent-based modelling, role-playing games, participatory simulation and scenario assessment, brainstorming, debriefing and evaluation, facilitation and conflict management.

Research is of great importance – to individuals, to society and to global development. Research also exercises considerable power at all these levels. For both these reasons, it is essential that research is undertaken in ways that are ethically sound.

 

General guidelines for research ethics cannot replace subject-specific guidelines, but should serve as a gateway to the principles and concerns of research ethics, including for institutions and individuals who are not themselves researchers.
