Ph.D. Course: Companion Modeling – Principles and applications with a special focus on facilitation
When: 21st – 26th of September, 2014
Where: Wageningen, the Netherlands
Companion Modelling, or ComMod, is a participatory modelling approach that uses role-playing games and simulation models to tackle complex issues in the fields of renewable resources and environment management. ComMod promotes dialogue, shared learning and collective decision-making, strengthening the adaptive management capacity of communities facing wicked environmental problems. A ComMod approach is iterative and evolves with the participative process whereby stakeholders are involved in the definition and design of the questions, models, simulations and outputs. It involves constant back and forth steps between the model, the field and the negotiation table.
The course will focus on:
- Concepts e.g., wicked problems, socio-ecological systems, complex systems, participatory modelling, simulation strategies.
- Methods and related tools e.g.,: system representation, participatory mapping, model conceptualization, agent-based modelling, role-playing games, participatory simulation and scenario assessment, brainstorming, debriefing and evaluation, facilitation and conflict management.
REMINDER: Kurs i universitetspedagogikk for stipendiater

Søknadsfrist: 1. September, 2014
Kurs i universitetspedagogikk for stipendiater er et tilbud til deg som er ansatt som stipendiat ved UiT. Du må ha avtale om undervisningsoppgaver på instituttet nå i høstsemesteret. Fullført kurs gir deg 50 timer uttelling i arbeidsplikten.
Kurset gir deg i stand til å:
- planlegge og gjennomføre undervisning
- utvikle dine egne undervisningsferdigheter

Arctic Frontiers and Emerging Leaders
When: 14th – 20th of January 2015
Where: Hurtigruta, Bodø
Selected candidates will participate in a blend of technical, social and cultural events accompanied by mentors from business, politics and academia. The program starts in the city of Bodø, then continues onboard the coastal steamer and ends in Tromsø, the gateway to the Arctic. A two days stop will be made at Svolvær to explore the marine resources and potential in the Lofoten region, and to look into the local history and culture of the region.
The participants will be challenged to engage in discussions and presentations during the program.
The content of the program is linked to the Arctic Frontiers 2015 conference topic “Climate and Energy” and includes the following sessions:
- Session 1 Politics and security in the High North
- Session 2 Climate and Energy in the Arctic
- Session 3 Safety of maritime operations in the Arctic
- Session 4 Business and society in Northern Norway
More information can be found here: http://www.arcticfrontiers.com/2015-conference/emerging-leaders
Application deadline for funding from the Research Council of Norway is 1st of November. More information on how to apply can be found on the Research Council’s webpage: http://www.forskningsradet.no/no/Utlysning/MILUTVARENAER/1240958620978/p1173268235938?visAktive=true

Forskningspolitisk Seminar 2014
Påmeldingsskjema finner du her:

PhD Course: BIO-8006 Environmental systems: integrating monitoring, research and management – 10 stp
Two important challenges in environmental sciences are to assess how human drivers impact on environmental systems and the effectiveness of management policies to adapt or mitigate these impacts. Answering these challenges implies we need to set up multidisciplinary monitoring systems that can efficiently measure changes and identify causes of changes for entities that, more often than not, are monitored on incongruent scales.
The course therefore aims at integrating monitoring, research and management around three themes: climate systems, ecological systems (marine, freshwater, and terrestrial), and the relationships between society, climate and ecological systems. For each theme, the course will rely on concrete case studies from northern regions, as well as presentations of general principles, such as adaptive management and monitoring.
To give the students a broad overview of the actual researches ongoing in this multidisciplinary domain, a large number of professors and researchers will participate in the course/group discussions (e.g. Nigel Yoccoz, Rolf Ims, Kim Holmen, Sandra Hamel, Claire Armstrong, Hallvard Strøm, Cecilie von Quillfeldt, Per Arne Amundsen, Jane Jepsen, Ole Einar Tveito).
The course will be held during three intensive weeks in October, Wednesday to Friday of weeks 44 to 46.

Seminar: How can technology improve teaching and learning?
When: 28th of August, 2014
Where: TEO-H1 1.343
Registration Deadline: 23.08.2014 (to register, go here).
This seminar will review the advantages and limitations of a technology-based teaching and learning and discuss how to address some of the key issues when designing, developing and delivering courses. One of the main challenges of using technology on teaching is the restricted time that PhD Students, Instructors and Professors find when having to combine teaching and research. Possible solutions will be discussed during the seminar.
