Project title: Fingerprinting constructions: the cube of form, meaning and context
Summary of the project:
This research project investigates relationships between pairs of constructions in terms of their form, meaning and context. We suggest visualizing these three dimensions in terms of a cube, and argue that our Cube Model enables us to integrate ostensibly unrelated phenomena such as synonymy, allomorphy and underspecification into a single semiotic system. At the same time, we argue, the Cube Model goes beyond simple categorical distinctions such as synonymy vs. non-synonymy and offers a more realistic analysis that acknowledges the scalar nature of relationships of form, meaning, and context.
Our argument is based on six detailed case studies from Russian word-formation.
