Science, astronomy included, plays a dominant role in our mastering of our living conditions. This brings a responsibility that goes far beyond the mere scientific communication. Part of this responsibility is linked to bringing knowledge in the political decision making processes. This is now a most important task, in part because the political world is very far removed from science and in part because of the enormous quantity of knowledge that is needed to address present day problems. Academies are the main players on this scene, they have evolved in the last decades to address this task as independently as possible.
